About Us

A studio, a pool, a neon wall, and beautiful house decor make up our photography studio space in North Wales (LL18 3AY). A bespoke and unique space for both professional and hobbyist models & photographers alike, it can be hired for an hourly fee. Photographer owner, Russ, who is an awarded, exhibited and published photographer, is also available for editorial style portrait commissions and model portfolios. While Russ doesn't personally offer family style photography (nor weddings), we do have photographers who hire us for family images. Check the relevant tabs for more information!

Studio Hire

For just £20ph, you can hire Splash Point Photo Photography Studio! Studio hire includes all our photographic areas and lighting, and that's some major bang for your buck given we're based in North Wales! I have no doubts that we'd be able to charge considerably more in any English city, such are our USP's and amenities that most studios just can't offer!

New to studio work?
Studio photography requires you to have a camera with a centre pin hotshoe to enable you to trigger the strobe lights. While Russ is always on hand, we encourage new photographers to get comfortable in manual mode and to research the basics of studio lighting prior. When shooting with strobe lights, you must use manual mode so that you do not exceed the maximum shutter sync speed (125 is usually a safe bet) for most camera & lighting brands. You need to combine that with a fixed ISO & aperture too - you should be making the decisions in a studio, not your camera! If you have a mirrorless camera that sees real time exposure, please find out how to turn it off in your menu. Your camera cannot predict the exposure of your average strobe light, and it will give you a black focusing screen. On my Canon R5, this setting is simply called 'Exposure Simulator' but other brand terminology differs. It often catches out even the most experienced photographers when they use a mirrorless for the first time in a studio setting.

"An Aladdin's Cave, a Tardis, like a kid in a candy store"!

Occasionally something comes along that takes you completely by surprise, and Splash Point is definitely one of those! On the outside, a perfectly normal looking seaside bungalow - but on the inside it couldn't be more different. An extensive range of rooms (over three floors!) in different styles with a huge range of props. There's an outside shooting area too, an indoor swimming pool, and even (wait for it), a conventional studio space with an infinity curve and backdrops. Russ couldn't be more helpful and accommodating, with copious supplies of tea and coffee on hand. A real gem of a studio, this definitely won't be my last visit.

To truly understand Splash Point, you must understand that the place was crafted by the people who created The Tardis in Doctor Who. The [main] studio has flash heads numbering in the double figures, the infinity cove, the neon wall, props galore or the free floating stairs. Once you've found your way around the embarrassment of riches and facilities, you're free to create your images, unless of course you're struggling, at which point in steps Russ with a cup of tea and as much assistance as you need to get the job done. I've used studios in the past costing twice as much with half of what Splash Point offers!

I absolutely love Splash Point studios! I could never tire of visiting. Russ is so lovely, and I find it super easy to get along with him. He was a fantastic host throughout the day, making a belting cuppa and even cooking me some food on my break. The most magical Christmas tree and decorations (mid-November - New Year), and the decorations alone are worth a trip if you’re looking for that magical Christmas shoot.

I had my first studio day at Splash Point, and what a day it was! Russ has such an amazing space with a huge range of shooting locations. The studio itself is extremely well-equipped and is such a cool space with tons of exciting sets to use. Then the house has endless shooting opportunities - such a nice vibe. You've heard the term, "like a kid in a candy store", that's how I'd describe any photographer walking into the unassuming-looking bungalow which gazes out to the Irish Sea in Rhyl. Don't be fooled, though, by first appearances; Splash Point Photo has an incredible range of equipment along with numerous places to shoot - these include the 'normal' (it's anything but typical) studio space, a pool, mini gym, boudoir and impressive reception hall. The biggest problem you'll have is planning your time and using it wisely.

Booking Russ as a photographer
Please include as much information as possible. Possibilities are endless, so what do you want to achieve? What are the vibes? Do you have links to example images? Can you give links to your social media or portfolio profile? If you're a business booking, it'll give me a vibe of your brand. If it's a private booking, I can see who I'm potentially working with.

Organising shoots completely in the dark with endless possibilities and just going through the motions is not really my jam. I get no enjoyment from it, so nor do I find it rewarding. I can't feel as though I'm offering value for money if I'm just taking generic 'nice' images from throwing up some lights. There are plenty of family photographers who will take your picture just to get paid, and they've got it down to an art. If you want to chat about vibes, ideas and make it more model like and editorial, I'm your man!

Digital strobes have more tech to go wrong, and often times, it's tech that isn't needed for every day non-specialist use.
